US-Israeli airstrikes target Iran’s Khorramabad Airport amid surging regional tensions

WEB DESK: Khorramabad Airport in western Iran was targeted in strikes blamed on U.S. and Israeli forces, Iranian state media reported.

The Mehr News Agency reported on Tuesday that the facility, located in Lorestan province, was struck in a joint operation.

While the deputy governor of the province confirmed the bombing, initial assessments suggest there were no immediate casualties. This strike forms part of a broader series of aerial bombardments, with explosions also reported in Tehran and Qom.

The situation remains volatile as provincial authorities continue to survey the extent of the structural damage to the airport’s infrastructure.

A decisive escalation in hostilities

The assault on Khorramabad follows a period of heightened friction between Tehran and the US. These strikes are widely viewed as the military manifestation of a recent ultimatum issued by US President Donald Trump with a fresh attack on Iran if Tehran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Following the expiration of the deadline, coalitional forces have expanded their target list to include critical national infrastructure.

Beyond aviation hubs, there are growing concerns that power plants and bridges may be the next focus of the campaign to force a de-escalation in the maritime blockade.

Retaliation and Global Security Concerns

In immediate response to the strikes on its soil, Iran launched a significant missile barrage targeting major Israeli urban centres, including Tel Aviv. This “tit-for-tat” cycle of violence has raised alarms across the international community, with diplomats at the United Nations calling for an urgent cessation of hostilities to prevent a full-scale regional war.

As unconfirmed reports emerge of further strikes on Mehrabad Airport in the capital, the global energy market has reacted sharply to the instability, highlighting the profound economic stakes tied to the security of the Persian Gulf.
