US Mission to Pakistan issues security alert, suspends Peshawar consulate operations

ISLAMABAD: The US Mission to Pakistan has issued a security alert, announcing temporary suspension of operations at its Peshawar consulate and cancellation of visa and consular appointments in Karachi and Lahore amid ongoing disruptions.

According to the alert issued on March 2, the US Consulate General Peshawar has temporarily suspended operations effective immediately.

It said that the US Embassy Islamabad will continue to provide all routine and emergency consular services for American citizens.

Meanwhile, due to continued disruptions and traffic diversions around the US Consulate General Karachi and the US Consulate General Lahore, all appointments for US visas and American Citizen Services scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, have been cancelled.

The US Embassy in Islamabad said it will resume normal consular operations on Tuesday, March 3.

The mission further stated that the embassy in Islamabad and the consulates in Karachi and Lahore are continuing to limit movements for US government personnel across the country as a precautionary measure.

Advisory for US citizens

The US Mission has advised American citizens in Pakistan to closely monitor local media, remain vigilant, and follow personal security protocols.

It urged US nationals to avoid large public gatherings, review personal security plans, maintain a low profile, and carry identification at all times.

Citizens have also been advised to ensure their enrolment in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is up to date and to monitor email and local media for further updates regarding appointments.

The advisory comes amid heightened security concerns and disruptions in several parts of the country.
