ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON/TEHRAN: The United States has conveyed a 15-point proposal to Iran through Pakistan as backchannel contacts between Washington and Tehran gather pace amid efforts to end the ongoing Middle East conflict, CNN reported.
The US media outlet said that US officials shared the proposal via intermediaries, including Pakistan, according to reports, as Washington seeks to open a diplomatic track alongside continued military tensions.
Meanwhile, Iranian officials confirmed that contact had been made with the United States to end the war, but said the initiative had come from Washington and that any talks remain indirect.
“Mediation efforts are under way, and Iran is ready for dialogue,” Iranian officials were quoted as saying, while maintaining that there are no direct negotiations between the two sides.
Pakistan has emerged as a key intermediary in the crisis, with officials offering Islamabad as a potential venue for talks if both sides agree.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif earlier said Pakistan would be “honoured” to host negotiations aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement, a proposal later amplified by US President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform.
Diplomatic contacts are being conducted through multiple intermediaries, including Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt, as both sides publicly send mixed signals about negotiations.
While Washington has signalled progress in what it describes as “constructive” discussions, Tehran has hardened its stance, demanding guarantees, compensation and an end to hostilities before entering formal talks, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The developments highlight Pakistan’s growing diplomatic role in the crisis, positioning itself as a bridge between the United States and Iran at a time of heightened regional tensions.
