WASHINGTON/DUBAI: The US military carried out strikes on Iran on Friday after an Iranian drone hit a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz. Each side accused the other of breaking the terms of a ceasefire reached the previous week.

US Central Command stated that aircraft targeted missile and drone storage sites and coastal radar installations. The command later released video footage showing an explosion. A US official said the operation had ended.

Iran reported that a projectile struck the area near a pier in Sirik in southern Iran. Iranian naval forces said they responded by striking US military targets in the region. Tehran gave no details on the targets hit.

Iran says port of Sirik sustains no damage

Iranian state media reported an explosion at the port of Sirik. Officials later said the port sustained no damage and continued operations. The Revolutionary Guards stated that their navy struck locations used by US forces and warned of a broader response to any further attacks.

The ceasefire agreement gives Iran control over ship traffic in the strait, according to the Guards. Iran said it fired warning shots and missiles toward vessels that violated regulations in the waterway.

Progress reported in Israel-Lebanon agreement

Separately, Israel and Lebanon signed an agreement to end fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. The deal requires Hezbollah to disarm and Israel to withdraw troops from Lebanon. Hezbollah said it would not cooperate.

Vice President JD Vance said the US had honoured the ceasefire with Iran. He stated that violence would be met with violence. Oil prices fell before the strikes as tankers left the strait. Saudi Aramco resumed crude loadings at its Ras Tanura terminal.
