US targets Chinese firms in fresh wave of Iran sanctions

WEB DESK: The United States government has launched a significant new round of economic sanctions aimed at further isolating Iran’s economy.

Announced on Friday, the measures specifically target a network of individuals and commercial entities based in China and Hong Kong, according to The New York Times.

These parties are accused of facilitating the Iranian military’s acquisition of essential supplies and sophisticated hardware.

This latest escalation by Washington is designed to disrupt the procurement channels that support Tehran’s defence capabilities.

Pressure on military supply chains

The primary objective of these new restrictions is to cripple Iran’s military-industrial supply chain. By cutting off access to critical materials, the US intends to make it significantly more difficult for Tehran to manufacture advanced weaponry, including drones and missiles.

While the focus remains heavily on Chinese and Hong Kong-based intermediaries, the sanctions also extend to entities located in Belarus and the United Arab Emirates.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasised that the administration remains committed to targeting those who provide weapons used against American forces.

Rising tensions ahead of Beijing summit

These diplomatic manoeuvres come at a particularly sensitive time, just days before a scheduled high-level summit between President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing.

Beijing’s continued support for Tehran has become a major point of contention for the Trump administration, which has been aggressively lobbing independent Chinese refineries to cease their purchases of Iranian oil.

As China remains the largest buyer of Iranian crude, Washington argues that this trade effectively props up the Iranian economy and, by extension, sponsors regional instability.

Additionally, the US continues to seek ways to pressure Iran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil conduit that has seen sporadic disruptions during the conflict.
