US war chief says coming days “decisive” in Iran conflict, urges deal

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of Defense John Daniel Raizin Caine said on Tuesday that the coming days in the conflict with Iran would be “decisive,” warning that Tehran faces tougher consequences if it does not agree to a deal.

Speaking at a press conference in Washington, Caine said the United States had struck around 200 targets inside Iran over the past day and would intercept any missiles fired by Tehran.

“The coming days will be decisive in this war,” he said, adding that Washington had “effectively neutralised” Iran’s navy and air force.

Caine said U.S. forces were continuing strikes on key industrial and research facilities in Iran, signalling sustained military pressure.

He added that President Donald Trump was seeking a deal with Iran, but warned that failure to reach an agreement would make the situation “more difficult” for Tehran.

“If Iran shows wisdom, a deal can be reached,” he said, adding that the United States had “many options,” while Iran had “limited choices.”
