ISLAMABAD: The National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP) will not allow vehicles on the motorway without an M-Tag from January 1, 2024.
Sources said that the NHMP has issued a warning, instructing travelers to obtain mandatory M-Tags for their vehicles before January 1, 2024.
Car owners, as well as passenger buses without an M-Tag, will face a ban on entering the motorways from January 1, 2024. Additionally, they will be fined, as stated by the NHMP.
This regulation applies to all motorways, including the Islamabad-Peshawar M-1, Lahore-Abdul Hakeem M-3, Pindi Bhattian-Multan M-4, Multan-Sukkur M-5, Hakla-Dera Ismail Khan M-14, and Hasan Abdal-Mansehra Expressway E-35. Approximately 150,000 vehicles pass through the Islamabad-Lahore M-2 Motorway daily. Vehicles equipped with an M-Tag can easily pass through checkpoints, avoiding traffic jams.

The M-Tag is a pre-paid radio frequency identification (RFID) chip that allows vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping. The chip is attached to the vehicle’s windscreen and automatically deducts the toll tax from the balance.
The NHMP states that the M-Tag reduces traffic congestion and pollution at toll plazas, ensuring a smooth flow of traffic on the motorways.
Previously, M-Tags were issued based on computerized national identity cards (CNICs). However, travelers are now required to submit their vehicle registration smart card. Travelers can recharge their M-Tags via the One Network App or at M-Tag Points.
