Venezuela: US confirms strikes, suspends commercial flights

Venezuela Emergency

WEB DESK: US President Donald Trump confirmed the United States has successfully carried out a large-scale military strike against Venezuela and its leadership. Venezuela’s defence minister said authorities are compiling information on those killed and injured in the US attack as emergency assessments continue. Meanwhile, CNN reported that the US Senate Armed Services Committee was not notified in advance of the potential military strikes, raising questions about congressional oversight.

The attack drew sharp international criticism, including from Iran, a close ally of Venezuela. Tehran condemned the US action as a “blatant violation” of Venezuela’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Iran’s foreign ministry called on the UN Security Council to act immediately to halt what it described as unlawful aggression and to hold those responsible accountable. Cuba also joined Iran in condemning the attack.

Seven blasts rock Caracas

At least seven explosions were reported near a military base in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas. Witnesses said panic spread across several parts of the city, with civilians seen fleeing onto the streets following the blasts. The United States has imposed a ban on flights by its commercial aircraft in Venezuela’s airspace following reports of seven attacks in the country, according to foreign media. In a related development, Reuters reported that US officials have confirmed American strikes in Venezuela, underscoring a sharp escalation in tensions.

The Venezuelan government has declared a national emergency and all social and political forces have been asked to present a united front in what is being dubbed as possible escalation by the US.

Reuters also reported that electricity was cut in parts of southern Caracas, prompting authorities to issue advisories urging residents to avoid unnecessary movement as security forces tightened control in the affected areas.

In a related development, Venezuela’s president was reportedly moved from the presidential palace to an undisclosed location, according to Russian media. The same reports said tanks and other armored military vehicles were observed moving through the city, signaling a heightened state of alert.

Officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the explosions or whether there were any casualties. The situation in Caracas remains fluid, with security forces on high alert amid growing uncertainty.
