LONDON: Tammy Abraham marked his return to Aston Villa with a dramatic late goal, earning his side a 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Saturday and keeping their slim title hopes alive.
The striker, who rejoined Villa Park last month in an £18 million move following a spell at Besiktas, scored his first league goal since returning in the 88th minute, rescuing a point for the hosts.
Leeds had looked set to secure victory after Anton Stach produced a stunning free kick from nearly 30 yards, surprising everyone by firing directly into the top corner instead of delivering a cross.
Abraham, however, had the final say. He reacted quickly in the closing moments, turning in Ezri Konsa’s header from a set-piece to level the score.
The result leaves third-placed Aston Villa seven points behind league leaders Arsenal, while also highlighting their resilience; the equaliser marked their league-leading 19th point gained from losing positions this season.
After the match, Abraham expressed his joy at being back at the club, describing his return as “a dream” and emphasising his desire to contribute energy and goals. He credited his instinct in the box for the equaliser, saying he stayed alert and ready for the opportunity.
Stach, meanwhile, reflected on his impressive strike, admitting he had little time to practice after returning from injury but took advantage of the goalkeeper’s positioning to attempt the unexpected shot.
Despite missing out on all three points, Abraham remained optimistic about Villa’s chances, urging his teammates to keep believing as they continue their pursuit of the league leaders.
