LONDON: An employee of Waitrose who nearly called the supermarket “his family” was dismissed on Sunday after serving at the store for years, following an altercation with a shoplifter over Lindt chocolate.
The incident happened at the supermarket’s Clapham Junction branch in south London, where Walker Smith, 54, was working.
The 54-year-old said he was working and had seen that the suspect was known to staff and had targeted the store before as well. In his interview, he said, “They told me someone had filled up a Waitrose bag with the eggs.”
The outed worker confronted the accused thief and “grabbed the bag”, the person pulled it back, leading to the bag splitting during the scuffle.
The eggs were pulled after a brief strife, leading the Lindt Gold Bunny Easter eggs to crash to the floor. The shoplifter then fled with eggs worth £13 each.
