War in Iran could make your PS5 more expensive

PS5

Sony is set to raise the price of its PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. and worldwide, citing rising costs in the global economy, costs analysts warn could worsen due to the ongoing war in the Middle East. The disc edition of the PS5 will jump $100 to $649.99, the digital edition will rise to $599.99, and the PS5 Pro will now cost $899.99. Price hikes take effect on April 2.

Memory Shortages and Surging Costs Drive the Hike

The PS5 relies on high-speed memory chips, which have seen unprecedented price increases as manufacturers prioritise demand from AI data centres. Sony says these rising costs, combined with global inflation pressures, made the price adjustment necessary to maintain hardware quality and innovation. Analysts describe the move as “inevitable” and warn similar hikes could hit other consoles like Xbox and Nintendo in the near future.

Middle East Conflict Adds Fuel to Global Inflation

Experts highlight that the war in Iran and tensions across the Middle East may trigger another wave of inflation, further driving up component costs. “The conflict is likely to compound the surge in memory and hardware prices,” said Piers Harding-Rolls, research director at Ampere Analysis. Consumers may now face higher gaming costs as geopolitical instability ripples through the electronics supply chain.
