‘War Machine’: Netflix’s brutal new sci-fi thriller hides a wild twist

War Machine

Netflix’s latest thriller War Machine begins like a familiar military drama before gradually revealing a far stranger story.

Directed by Patrick Hughes, the film follows a group of candidates undergoing the punishing US Army Ranger selection process. The recruits, identified only by numbers, are pushed through exhausting drills designed to test their physical strength and mental resilience.

At the centre of the story is candidate 81, played by Alan Ritchson, a determined recruit trying to prove he has what it takes to survive the elite programme while carrying the memory of his late brother, portrayed by Jai Courtney.

For much of the film, the focus remains on the intense pressures of the selection process, with instructors closely observing which candidates have the discipline and mental toughness needed to advance.

Officer Torres, played by Mission: Impossible actor Esai Morales, is one of the leaders overseeing the programme.

Ritchson said portraying the physically demanding role required pushing himself to the limit.

But the story takes a dramatic shift when the candidates head into the wilderness for what they believe is their final field exercise.

Instead of a routine training test, the situation quickly spirals into a desperate fight for survival as the recruits discover they are not alone in the forest.

Director Hughes said the film’s concept was inspired by a nightmare.

“I had this horrific dream where I was being stalked in a forest with rain and lightning,” Hughes told Inverse. “I saw the foot of this giant metallic beast sweeping a laser through the trees.”

The unexpected shift transforms War Machine from a grounded military drama into a tense survival thriller.

Hughes said films such as Deliverance and The Revenant helped shape the survival elements of the story.

“It’s a big action sci-fi we’re making, but it’s also a survival thriller,” he said. “You can’t really make a survival film without it leaning into horror because of the isolation.”

The result is a genre-blending thriller that mixes intense military training with a suspenseful fight to stay alive.

War Machine is now streaming on Netflix.
