WEB DESK: In a landmark diplomatic shift, Israel and Lebanon are set to convene in Washington next week for their first-ever direct negotiations at the ambassadorial level.
The talks, mediated by the United States, aim to establish a sustainable ceasefire and address the escalating security crisis along the Blue Line.
This development marks a significant departure from decades of indirect communication, signalling a concerted effort by the Trump administration to stabilise the Levant independently of broader regional tensions.
Decoupling the ‘Hezbollah Track’ from Iran
Senior Lebanese officials have confirmed that the White House is intentionally pursuing a “separate track” for the Lebanon-Israel conflict, consciously decoupling these negotiations from the ongoing American-led ceasefire talks with Iran.
This strategy, reportedly spearheaded by President Trump, seeks to isolate the specific security concerns regarding Hezbollah’s disarmament and the return of displaced civilians to northern Israel, preventing these “skirmishes” from stalling a wider regional grand bargain.
While Beirut has expressed a desire for a “simultaneous” announcement of a truce alongside the start of formal dialogue a framework similar to the current U.S.-Iran model the Israeli leadership remains firm that military operations will continue until a concrete security guarantee is reached on the ground.
