WEB DESK: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani rolled up his sleeves on and joined residents in Brooklyn to clear snow as a major winter storm swept through the city.
Mamdani was seen helping residents in neighborhoods including Williamsburg, Clinton Hill, and Bedford-Stuyvesant, removing snow around stuck vehicles and clearing sidewalks near NYCHA buildings. Sharing his efforts on social media, the mayor wrote, “No task too big or no job too small,” adding that he was “happy to lend a hand and help out New Yorkers.”
The city was hit hard by Winter Storm Fern, which brought several inches of snow by midday, accompanied by strong winds and below-freezing temperatures. The storm created hazardous travel conditions, prompting New York City public schools to shift to remote learning on Monday.
In response, city officials activated emergency operations, mobilizing sanitation crews for snow plowing and salting, and opening warming centers across all five boroughs. The New York City Housing Authority and other agencies were called upon to ensure residents’ safety amid the heavy snow and frigid weather.
The winter system affected much of the Northeast, causing travel disruptions and prompting multiple states to declare emergencies. City officials encouraged residents to stay indoors whenever possible. Despite the challenging conditions, no major injuries were reported from snow-clearing efforts.
As crews continue monitoring the storm and assisting residents, Mamdani’s hands-on approach has been widely praised on social media, with many highlighting the mayor’s willingness to work alongside New Yorkers in one of the city’s toughest winter storms in recent years.
