SAN FRANCISCO: A mountain lion was spotted near Lafayette Park in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood late Sunday after a resident captured the animal on video, authorities confirmed.
Wildlife specialists believe the animal is a young mountain lion, estimated to be around one year old, and may have wandered into the city after becoming separated from its usual habitat. Experts note that mountain lions often travel long distances at this age as they leave their birth areas in search of new territory.
Officials said the animal is not expected to remain in San Francisco for long and will likely move south and away from densely populated areas on its own.
The sighting has raised concerns among some nearby residents. Manuel Cases, who regularly walks his dogs in the area, said he plans to stay away from the park for the time being.
“It’s amazing to see wildlife in the city, but with small dogs, it’s worrying,” Cases said. “We’ll avoid the park until it’s clear everything is safe.”
San Francisco Animal Care and Control urged the public to remain calm if they encounter a mountain lion. The agency advised people not to approach the animal, to slowly increase distance without running, and to immediately report any sightings to authorities.
