WEB DESK: Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is testing a new feature for iPhone users that introduces a green dot next to a contact’s profile picture to indicate when they are actively using the application, according to beta tracker WABetaInfo.
The feature, currently available in iOS beta version 26.26.10.72, adds a small green circle to the bottom-right corner of a contact’s profile photo while they are online. The indicator automatically disappears once the user is no longer active on the platform.
The update builds on WhatsApp’s existing “last seen” feature by providing a real-time indication of a contact’s availability. The addition brings the platform in line with online status indicators offered by rival messaging applications, such as Instagram and Apple’s iMessage.
Current limitations and interface
For the time being, the green dot is visible only on a contact’s information page rather than in the main chat list, a factor that currently limits its day-to-day utility.
However, industry analysts suggest the feature could be expanded to the primary chat screen before its wider public release, as that remains the interface where users are most likely to check a contact’s availability.
Privacy considerations and upcoming updates
Addressing potential surveillance and privacy concerns, WhatsApp clarified that the new indicator will strictly respect existing privacy settings. Users who have previously chosen to hide their online status will not display the green dot, ensuring the feature does not override established user preferences.
The online status indicator is the latest in a series of capabilities being tested by the messaging giant. Other features currently in development include username support, view-once text messages, and enhanced privacy options for Meta AI interactions, as the platform continues to modernise its interface to counter competition.
