Why has Bill Gates pulled out of India AI Impact Summit 2026 keynote?

The announcement was made earlier today through a statement issued by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

WEBDESK: Bill Gates has withdrawn from delivering the keynote address at the ongoing India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, prompting questions about the timing of the decision amid Jeffery Epstein controversy surrounding recently released US investigative documents.

According to multiple media reports, the announcement was made earlier today through a statement issued by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which said the move was intended to keep the summit’s focus on artificial intelligence and policy discussions.

Foundation cites focus on AI

In a post shared by the foundation’s India office, officials said the decision followed internal deliberations and was aimed at ensuring that conversations at the six-day summit remained centred on AI innovation and development goals.

Ankur Vora, who oversees the foundation’s Africa and India operations, will represent the organisation at the event and address participants in place of Gates.

The revised programme for the summit did not list Gates among keynote speakers, fuelling speculation before the foundation confirmed the change.

Organisers have described the 2026 edition as the largest yet, with delegates from more than 20 countries and hundreds of global AI leaders in attendance. Previous editions of the conference were held in the United Kingdom, South Korea and France.

Controversy linked to Epstein file release

The development comes amid renewed scrutiny following the release of documents by the United States Department of Justice related to the investigation into late financier Epstein.

Reports in the US media said the documents included a draft email in which Epstein made allegations concerning Gates’ personal life. Gates has denied the claims, describing them as false.

In a recent interview, the Microsoft co-founder said he regretted having met Epstein and maintained that their interactions were limited to discussions on philanthropy and potential fundraising for global health initiatives.

Summit continues amid global attention

Despite the controversy, the India AI Impact Summit is proceeding as scheduled, with discussions focused on artificial intelligence governance, emerging technologies and their implications for development.

The foundation reiterated its commitment to advancing innovation in health, agriculture and digital infrastructure, adding that its participation in the summit reflects its continued engagement with India’s technology and policy ecosystem.

While Gates’ absence has drawn international attention, organisers have not indicated any changes to the broader programme, and sessions are continuing with global policymakers, researchers and industry leaders in attendance.
