WEB DESK: has announced that starting next year, children under the age of 16 will be prohibited from using social media platforms.
The country’s Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fazil, stated that the government is reviewing age restriction policies from countries like Australia to protect young users from online threats such as cyberbullying, financial scams, and sexual exploitation. In line with this, Meta (Facebook) will also deactivate accounts of users under 16 in Australia starting 4 December 2025.
Fahmi Fazil said the ban will officially come into effect on 1 January 2026, and social media companies are expected to comply by preventing children under 16 from creating accounts. The minister also advised parents to encourage their children to engage in outdoor activities rather than spending excessive time on digital devices.
This move aims to provide a safer online environment for minors while promoting healthier lifestyles. Malaysia joins a growing list of countries implementing stricter regulations for young social media users to shield them from digital risks and ensure responsible internet use.
Authorities emphasised that parental guidance and oversight remain crucial in helping children navigate the online world safely, complementing the upcoming regulatory changes.
