Karol G’s night at the 2026 American Music Awards was bigger than a typical trophy win.

The Colombian superstar received the International Artist Award of Excellence at the 52nd AMAs, becoming the first artist to earn the honour since Whitney Houston in 2009. She also picked up Best Latin Album for Tropicoqueta, capping off a major night for the singer.

Accepting the award in Las Vegas, Karol G reflected on the personal meaning music has had in her life, saying it gave her a sense of purpose and became a way to connect with people through healing and shared experiences.

She later thanked fans around the world in Spanish before reacting with excitement after learning she had also won Best Latin Album.

The moment carried extra weight because of the company she now joins.

The International Artist Award of Excellence honours musicians whose influence extends beyond charts and borders. Previous recipients include Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and the Bee Gees, placing Karol G among some of music’s biggest names.

The recognition comes just weeks after another landmark achievement for the singer. Earlier this year, Karol G became the first Latina woman to headline Coachella, using the moment to spotlight the wider Latino community and the barriers Latin artists have faced in global spaces.

Her rise has already reshaped records. In 2023, MAÑANA SERÁ BONITO became the first Spanish-language album by a woman to debut at number one on the Billboard 200, further cementing her crossover appeal.

With a rare AMA honour and another major win under her belt, Karol G’s latest milestone feels less like a breakthrough and more like proof that the Colombian hitmaker has become a global force in music.
