Why PCB wants to change the Gaddafi Stadium name?

LAHORE: Cricket fans and citizens across Pakistan took to social media, seeking the reason that led the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)_to change the name of Lahore’s iconic Gaddafi Stadium.

Here are the reasons, which the PCB believes, will boost domestic cricket and others after the Gaddafi stadium gets a renewed identity.

It’s about money, cricket, and modernisation. The PCB officially decided Thursday to change its name, inviting proposals from the public and businesses until March 24.

The motive behind this move is commercial sponsorship and revenue generation.

Following, the domestic cricket body plans to sell the naming rights of the stadium to a company, potentially earning around Rs1billion for five years.

This model of bidding for government infrastructure is a common practice in international sports, where stadiums often carry the names of corporate sponsors, providing the public with the best facilities to enjoy watching games in comfort.

The money generated from the naming rights isn’t just for show as it will primarily help the PCB upgrade stadium facilities, fund domestic cricket, and support the national team’s operations in a rapidly growing and modernised manner.

In 2024 too, the PCB attempted a similar deal with a private bank, but the agreement wasn’t met, leaving the stadium’s name unchanged.

Now that the process is reopening, it gives all the interested stakeholders and potential sponsors another chance to shape the future of one of Pakistan’s most historic cricket venues in the present.

As cricket fans and sponsors prepare to pitch their ideas, Lahore’s beloved stadium may soon enter a new chapter, one that blends history with the business of sport.
