ISLAMAABD: In an unexpected meteorological spectacle, Rawalpindi and Islamabad faced a deluge of heavy rain and hailstorms, while Murree and its surroundings were transformed by thundershowers and a picturesque blanket of snow.
Murree, often referred to as “Malika-e-Kohsar,” experienced its inaugural snowfall of the winter season, eliciting joy and relief among the public.
The announcement of four holidays by the caretaker provincial government contributed to an influx of visitors, transforming Murree into a winter wonderland. The iconic Mall Road bustled with activity as tea and coffee shops became vibrant hubs for those savoring the enchantment of the snowfall.
The scenic mountains of Naran, Kaghan, and adjacent areas were draped in a pristine white layer, leading to the closure of the road to Babusir Top, as confirmed by the Kaghan Development Authority.
Responding to the weather onslaught, authorities in Rawalpindi and Islamabad issued a high alert, mobilizing machinery to low-lying areas to mitigate potential impact, as reported by a spokesperson.
However, the Islamabad International Airport grappled with rainwater infiltrating through the roof, revealing a lapse in management. Airport staff were deployed to hastily collect water in makeshift containers.
Compounding the challenges, the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) reported power cuts, intensifying public inconvenience. Murree faced disruptions due to slippery roads, prompting authorities to release a travel advisory. Motorists were urged to exercise caution, abstain from speeding, and utilize fog lights. The Rescue 1122 staff stood on high alert, ready to respond promptly to any emergencies.

The wintry conditions extended to Galiyat, Nathiagali, and Ayubia, with reports of landslides adding to the complexities. A group of stranded tourists on Babusir Top found relief through a successful rescue mission by the Kaghan Development Authority.
Taking precautionary measures, the administration suspended all movement on Babu Sartop Road to avert potential incidents. Tourists and motorists were redirected to use the KKH road instead of the Naran road to reach Gilgit. Snowfall records indicated four to six inches at Buttakundi, Jalkhad, and Lulu Sir Lake
