ISLAMABAD: As the viewers finally started hate-watching or actually started enjoying the dating reality tv show, La Zawal Ishq, it turns out that the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday took up a petition seeking a ban on the YouTube-based show, which has drawn controversy for allegedly promoting “obscenity” and “moral decline.”

The petition, filed by the Amaan Taraqqi Party, argued that the show violates social and cultural norms, urging authorities to take immediate action to restrict its online availability. Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir issued notices to the federal government, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and other concerned bodies to submit their responses.

Hosted by actor Ayesha Omar, La Zawal Ishq has divided audiences and social media users alike. While supporters defend it as an exercise of creative freedom and a fresh format for Pakistani digital content, critics claim it crosses moral boundaries and sets a dangerous precedent for online entertainment.

The case has also reignited debate over freedom of expression in Pakistan and the extent to which digital content should be regulated. The court will resume hearings on November 20 to determine whether further action will be taken against the show or its creators.

Earlier, however, PEMRA had announced that it will not ban the dating reality show, despite widespread criticism and public demands for its removal. The show’s teaser, released on September 12, sparked outrage online, with hashtags like #BoycottLazawalIshq and #BoycottAyeshaOmar trending as users condemned it for promoting values “against Islam and Pakistani culture.”

In a statement, PEMRA said it had received numerous complaints but clarified that the show is not licensed for television broadcast and therefore falls outside its jurisdiction. The authority explained that Lazawal Ishq is currently circulating only on social media platforms, where PEMRA has no regulatory authority.

The show, inspired by global dating formats such as Love Island, features couples living together and competing for prizes. Critics say it undermines family values, while some activists plan to approach the Islamabad High Court to seek a ban.
