The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has announced that this year’s season-ending WTA Finals will be held in Indian Wells, instead of Saudi Arabia, after both parties agreed to end their three-year hosting agreement ahead of schedule.

In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, the WTA and the Saudi Tennis Federation said they had mutually decided to conclude the partnership, which was announced in April 2024, after two years.

The prestigious tournament, featuring the world’s top eight singles players and doubles teams, will take place from November 8 to 15 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

WTA Chair Valerie Camillo said Indian Wells offers a world-class venue with outstanding facilities and a passionate fan base, making it an ideal stage for the season finale.

Riyadh had secured a three-year deal to host the WTA Finals, replacing Cancun, with a record prize fund of $15 million. However, the agreement faced criticism from human rights groups and former tennis stars, who questioned the WTA’s decision to stage its flagship event in Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi Tennis Federation said the partnership helped expand women’s tennis in the kingdom through coaching programmes, community initiatives and increased fan engagement, with tournament attendance growing by 20 per cent year-on-year.

The WTA said earlier this year it had begun discussions with potential hosts for the tournament from 2027 onwards. While Indian Wells will host the 2026 edition, the search for a long-term venue is expected to continue.
