BIGBANG set to make waves at the 2024 MAMA awards

OSAKA: As excitement builds for the 2024 MAMA Awards, fans are buzzing with excitement over the potential appearance of one of greatest boy bands in K-pop history: BIGBANG.

According to reports, G-Dragon will unveil a new single during the event, featuring his bandmates Taeyang and Daesung.

The performance is scheduled for November 23 at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan. It would be their first music release as a trio since the departures of Seungri and T.O.P.

BIGBANG is often hailed as one of the greatest boy bands K-pop ever produced. They debuted in 2006 under the YG Entertainment.

The group  quickly rose to fame with an eclectic blend of hip-hop, R&B and electronic music. The boy bang churned out hits such as “Lies”, “Haru Haru” and “Fantastic Baby”.

The often colourful and whimsical aesthetics of the band’s music video coupled with the iconic songs helped propel them to immediate stardom.

However, the group’s journey was not without controversy. In 2019, Seungri announced his retirement from the entertainment industry, devastating millions of global fans.

The self-exile was a result of a huge scandal involving allegations of prostitution and corruption linked to the Burning Sun nightclub.

The incident devastated and shocked the Korean society, and tarnished not only Seungri’s reputation but also cast a huge pallor over rest of the group.

Following Seungri, T.O.P also faced his own issues, including a brief hiatus due to personal struggles and a drug-related incident that led to intense media and public scrutiny .

The remaining members, G-Dragon, Taeyang and Daesung, escaped relatively unscathed. G-Dragon would go on to have an extremely lucrative career, and is considered one of most successful artists in K-pop industry.

The last release from the BIGBANG as a full group was “Still Life” that came out in 2022. The group ceased any activity together since then, leading many to speculate the boy bang was well and truly over.

However, their upcoming performance at the MAMA Awards has raised hopes of diehard fans of BIGBANG, as the ever-hopefuls wish for a revival of their favourite musical act.

A producer of the event hinted that discussions regarding BIGBANG’s appearance at the MAMA Awards was “ongoing”.
