WEB DESK: Scientists are playfully warning of a “looming invasion” of cicada in the United States (US) this year, driven by the convergence of two ‘generations’ or ‘broods’ of the insect.
According to scientists, this rare occurrence was last observed in 1803.
Cicadas are insects known for their sporadic emergence from underground habitats. This year, they are set to make a noticeable appearance. Despite their large numbers, cicadas possess camouflage abilities akin to chameleons, making them elusive in the wild.

However, their presence will be felt in 2024 as they engage in behaviours such as “molting”. During molting, cicadas shed their exoskeletons, revealing their adult forms.
Contrary to common belief, cicadas are harmless insects and pose no threat to humans or the environment. Engaging in activities like tree climbing and urine emission are inherent behaviours of cicadas, causing no notable harm.
Scientists expect cicada emergence around the mid of May in the US state of Georgia, with Illinois also expected to witness a significant influx. Trillions of periodical cicadas are expected to surface, heralding a ‘mass invasion’ characterised by a collective song as loud as jet engines.

Scientists project millions of cicadas per acre spanning approximately 16 US states. However, despite their overwhelming numbers, cicadas are more of an inconvenience than a threat.
Looking ahead, the next convergence of these specific broods is not expected until approximately the year 2245.
