Dead Bryde’s whale discovered on Balochistan shoreline


PASNI: A distressing incident unfolded on the Balochistan coast as a lifeless 27-foot-long Bryde’s whale was discovered.

According to Jang Urdu, Abdul Rahim Baloch, Deputy Director Environment at Gwadar Development Authority in Balochistan, reported that the whale’s lifeless body washed ashore in the Pasni area’s Sarbandan beach.

The reports indicate that the traces of fishing nets were found on the whale’s body, leading to the hypothesis that the whale met its unfortunate end entangled in the net. Abdul Rahim Baloch expressed concern over the potential threat posed by fishing gear to marine life.

The species in question, identified as Bryde’s whale, is classified as endangered, adding urgency to the need for conservation efforts.

Meanwhile, Moazzam Khan, Advisor to World Wide Fund for Nature Pakistan (WWF) Pakistan, highlighted previous instances of Bryde’s whale sightings in Pakistan.

Moreover, Khan pointed out a recent surge in recorded incidents of Bryde’s whales getting caught in fishing gear in the Arabian Sea.
