WEB DESK: The highly anticipated superhero film, Deadpool & Wolverine, featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has made a monumental impact at the box office, achieving the eighth biggest opening of all time with a staggering $205 million domestically.
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ celebrated by Marvel fans after first show
This incredible feat has set a new benchmark for R-rated films, surpassing the previous record held by the first Deadpool, which opened at $133.7 million.
Directed by Shawn Levy and in close collaboration with franchise mastermind Ryan Reynolds, the movie’s domestic success is just part of its global triumph. Internationally, Deadpool & Wolverine amassed an impressive $233.3 million from 55 markets, culminating in a worldwide launch of $438.3 million. Premium format screens contributed significantly to this total, with $36.5 million from Imax ticket sales, marking a record for both July and R-rated films in this large-format exhibitor.
Before its release, industry experts had predicted an opening weekend in the range of $160 million to $175 million in North America, numbers that were already significant for an R-rated film.

However, Deadpool & Wolverine exceeded these expectations, setting additional records domestically, including the top opening ever for Reynolds, Levy, and Jackman, as well as the fifth-biggest superhero launch.
The film also holds the record for the biggest July opening of all time, the largest opening of 2024, and the biggest debut since Spider-Man: No Way Home in December 2021. Globally, it’s the most substantial opening since Avatar: The Way of Water. Furthermore, the movie has pushed Marvel’s MCU movies past the $30 billion mark in combined worldwide ticket sales, solidifying its status as the top-grossing franchise in history.
Deadpool & Wolverine is the first R-rated film released by Disney and marks a significant comeback for Kevin Feige’s Disney-owned Marvel after a challenging period. The film’s success is attributed to strong reviews, stellar audience feedback, and a 97 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the second-highest score ever for a Marvel film, following Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The original Deadpool made history with its $133.7 million domestic opening in February 2016, proving that a superhero film could succeed despite an R-rating.
Its sequel, Deadpool 2, followed with $125.5 million two years later. Marvel acquired the Deadpool franchise when Disney bought 20th Century Fox, which had rights to the X-Men universe of characters.
