From science to action: World Ozone Day 2025 focuses on practical solutions

World Ozone Day

WEB DESK: World Ozone Day, formally known as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, is being observed today, marking the anniversary of the 1987 Montreal Protocol – an international agreement aimed at phasing out ozone-depleting substances.

The day has been recognised annually since 1994, following a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly. World Ozone Day also draws attention to the Montreal Protocol’s success as one of the most effective environmental agreements in history. The treaty has led to the global phase-out of substances like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were found to be responsible for thinning the ozone layer.

Scientific studies have shown that thanks to coordinated international efforts, the ozone layer is on a path to recovery. However, ongoing vigilance is necessary to prevent backsliding and ensure long-term sustainability.

This year’s theme, “From Science to Global Action,” highlights the role of scientific research in shaping environmental policy and driving global efforts to protect the ozone layer. The focus is on turning scientific understanding into practical steps that nations and individuals can take to safeguard the environment.

INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY

As part of the observance, messages shared around the world stress the importance of everyday choices. From avoiding harmful aerosols to adopting eco-friendly products, people are being reminded that even small lifestyle changes contribute to larger environmental impacts.

With this year’s theme urging action based on scientific evidence, governments, institutions, and individuals are being encouraged to continue supporting environmental policies that preserve the ozone layer. Education campaigns, stricter enforcement of regulations, and innovation in green technologies are among the key strategies being discussed.

OZONE PROTECTION IS ENVIORNMENTAL PROTECTION

On the occasion of World Ozone Day 2025, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz issued a statement highlighting the urgent need for environmental protection and reaffirming the province’s commitment to climate action.

CM Maryam said that “ozone is the protector of our environment,” and saving it is “the most important duty of humanity.” She warned that ozone layer depletion leads to serious consequences including disease outbreaks, crop losses, and risks to the well-being of future generations.

Linking ozone protection with broader climate challenges, she noted that climate change has altered rainfall patterns, contributing to recent devastating floods in Punjab. She called for continued and coordinated action to address the environmental crisis.

Shedding light on recent policy moves, the chief minister said that for the first time, Punjab has introduced a comprehensive environmental policy aimed at ensuring a safe and sustainable future for the province’s children.

Among the measures being promoted are introduction of eco-friendly electric buses to reduce air pollution, expansion of green energy and solarisation projects across the province, and reforestation efforts under the “Plant for Pakistan” campaign to improve air quality and environmental health.

The chief minister also stressed that protecting the ozone layer is not solely the government’s responsibility, saying, “Ozone protection is not just the responsibility of the government but of every citizen. It is our responsibility to play our role.”

She urged the public to take part in safeguarding the environment, “I appeal to the public to join hands in making our air, water and land safe for future generations.” CM Maryam reiterated that Punjab is on a clear path toward a green, clean and safe future, and said that this “journey will not stop now.”
