WEB DESK: Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney recently advocated for United States (US) President Joe Biden to reconsider his decision to run for reelection.

A prominent Democratic fundraiser, Clooney took to an op-ed in “The New York Times” to convey his perspective. The Hollywood actor expressed deep respect for Biden but raised concerns about his ability to lead effectively, citing factors related to age.

George Clooney, a longtime supporter of Biden, pointed out Biden’s uphill battle against time. Recalling a recent fundraising event they co-hosted, Clooney noted a noticeable decline in the president’s strength and presence compared to earlier years and his vice presidency.

The actor highlighted prevailing apprehensions among prominent Democrats, including senators and governors, with whom he privately conferred about Biden. Clooney asserted a consensus among them that Biden’s leadership might imperil Democratic prospects in the forthcoming elections, potentially resulting in a loss of control over Congress.

Clooney’s suggestion for Biden to step aside coincides with growing unease within the Democratic Party following Biden’s disappointing debate performance. He contended that Biden’s lackluster showing was not an isolated event but rather indicative of broader concerns about his ability to effectively lead the party against Republican opposition.

Recognising Biden’s services, Clooney urged Democratic leaders like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to begin deliberations on Biden’s voluntary withdrawal from the race.

He stressed that this call was not a personal rebuke of Biden but a strategic decision aimed at securing the party’s future.

Clooney brushed aside concerns that Biden’s exit would cause turmoil within the party. He brought up other figures such as Vice President Kamala Harris as capable contenders to lead the party into the next election cycle.
