Govinda fails to reconcile; Sunita goes ahead with divorce

MUMBAI: Once again, reports of divorce between Bollywood’s once-upon-a-time sensation Govinda and his wife Sunita Ahuja are making rounds, with Indian media claiming that Sunita is determined to part ways with her husband.

Govinda, who rose to fame in the 1990s with his dance moves and comic roles, remains one of Bollywood’s most recognisable entertainers. He and Sunita married in 1987 and have two children.

According to the Indian website, Bollywood Shaadis, Sunita first filed for divorce in December 2024, accusing Govinda of “adultery, cruelty, and desertion.”

Reports in Indian media suggest 60-year-old Govinda has been linked to a 30-year-old Marathi actress, and when Sunita learnt about this relationship, she decided to part ways with Govinda.

At the time, the couple dismissed the reports as rumours, but certain indications suggested all was not well between them. For instance, Sunita removed her husband’s surname from her social media profile.

She also revealed in an earlier interview with Hindi Rush that Govinda was living at his bungalow while she and their children stayed in a separate apartment.

She even teasingly remarked on Govinda’s lack of romantic gestures, saying: “I have told him that in my next life, he should not be my husband.”

Following the divorce rumours, Govinda and Sunita were rarely seen together, though they did make occasional joint appearances at events. After fresh reports surfaced in February and March, the two vaguely denied the news, with Sunita insisting that no force could separate her from her husband.

Govinda wants out-of-court settlement

However, new details suggest the matter has indeed reached court, with hearings held in May and June this year.

Court documents cited by Indian media claim Sunita has invoked the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, alleging her husband’s extramarital affairs.

She has reportedly attended all proceedings, while Govinda has skipped appearances, instead seeking reconciliation.

Govinda’s manager, Shashi Sinha, once again came forward in his defence.

In a statement to Hindustan Times, he dismissed the allegations of adultery and cruelty.

“Govinda ji is not someone who can raise his hand or shout at anyone. These cruelty allegations are baseless. Every couple has fights, but they are working on these issues together.”

Notably, Sinha had previously brushed off divorce speculations, calling them mere “publicity stunts”. In an earlier interview, he claimed that no formal papers had been filed for divorce by either side.
