Common cold in the air — how to take care?

common cold

Cold remedies are everywhere, but do they actually work? Since colds are caused by viruses, there’s no cure. However, some remedies can ease symptoms and help you feel better. Here’s a look at what works and what doesn’t.

Effective Cold Remedies

A cold typically lasts 1 to 2 weeks, but you don’t have to suffer the whole time. These tips may help:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids like water, juice, clear broth, or warm lemon water with honey to relieve congestion and prevent dehydration. Avoid alcohol, coffee, and caffeinated sodas, as they can worsen dehydration.
  • Rest: Your body needs time to heal, so take it easy.
  • Sip Warm Liquids: Chicken soup, tea, or warm apple juice may help loosen congestion and soothe your throat.
  • Try Honey: Honey can help ease coughs in adults and children over one year old. Add it to warm tea or lemon water.
  • Use a Humidifier: A cool-mist vaporizer or humidifier can add moisture to the air, which may ease congestion. Be sure to change the water daily and clean the device regularly.

Soothing a Sore Throat

For temporary relief, gargle with salt water. Mix 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of salt in an 8-ounce glass of warm water.

Using Cold & Cough Medicines

For adults and children over five, over-the-counter decongestants, antihistamines, and pain relievers may ease some symptoms. However, they won’t cure a cold or make it go away faster.

These medicines aren’t safe for younger children. Misuse or overdose can cause serious harm. Always follow dosage instructions and check labels to avoid taking too much of the same ingredient. If unsure, consult a healthcare provider before giving medicine to children.

Cold Remedies That Don’t Work

Some treatments won’t help a cold, no matter how common they are.

  • Antibiotics: These fight bacterial infections, not viruses. Taking them for a cold won’t speed up recovery. Misusing antibiotics can also lead to antibiotic resistance, a growing global health concern.

Following these tips can help ease symptoms, but the best remedy is time. Rest, stay hydrated, and allow your body to recover naturally.
