Isle of Wight Festival 2024: A vibrant legacy of music and culture


NEWPORT: It is the final day of the renowned Isle of Wight Festival 2024, where more than 55,000 music lovers have been gathering at Seaclose Park to enjoy their favourite music acts.

Saturday night saw the electronic music legends The Prodigy headlining the main stage, delivering an electrifying performance to close out the evening.

The Irish electronic band formed in 1990 by Liam Howlett and is widely recognised as pioneers of the “big beat” genre. The band originated from the underground rave scene and since then, have gained mainstream success with tracks like “Charly” and “Everybody in the Place.” Over the years, the band has evolved their sound, integrating techno and rock influences.

At Seaclose Park, The Prodigy captivated the audience with their iconic tracks such as “Breathe,” “Out Of Space,” and “Firestarter.”

Earlier in the day, festival-goers enjoyed a series of performances on the Main Stage by ceelbrated acts including “The Bootleg Beatles”, “The K’s”, and “The Darkness”. “Crowded House” delighted attendees with renditions of their popular songs such as “Don’t Dream It’s Over” and “Weather With You”.

Meanwhile, at the Big Top stage, Johnny Marr had the crowd in a frenzy with with songs from The Smiths and his own collection. The Big Top stage was closed by “The Pretenders” who delivered a dynamic set featuring well-known hits like “Let The Sun Come In” and “Kid”.

The festival’s ‘summer solstice’ theme brought an extra thrill, with attendees dressed in colourful costumes inspired by local English folklore. They gathered at the Strawberry Fields for a best-dressed competition.

The Isle of Wight Festival 2024 will conclude with performances by iconic emo-era legends Green Day and Scottish punk band Simple Minds. The festival also features a lineup of various music acts performing across 13 stages.

The Isle of Wight Festival is held annually in Newport, United Kingdom. The music festival has a long history stretching back to its origins as a counterculture movement from 1968 to 1970.

The music festival is notable for its enormous crowds and iconic performances by legends including Bob Dylan, The Who, The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix.

The festival quickly became famous with huge cultural significance. The 1970 edition was attended by over 600,000 music lovers, one of largest gatherings of its time. This led to the government stepping in and legal restrictions were placed on large outdoor events without special permits.

Following a hiatus, the festival was revived in 2002 at Seaclose Park and has since grown into a major event in the UK music scene.

Despite interruptions such as the cancellation in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Isle of Wight Festival still manages to attract huge throngs of people.
