LOS ANGELES: Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar were the big winners this Sunday at the 67th annual Grammy awards, with eight awards being won between the two.
Kendrick won five of those eight, including both record of the year and song of the year, as well as best rap song, best rap performance, and best music video. It was last year’s summer hit, “Not Like Us,” that won the 27-year-old hip hop artist.
It marked a stark change in award show culture, as it was the first ever diss track to win a Grammy. Released back in May of last year, the song was the defining moment in the feud between Kendrick and Drake. Despite it’s catchiness, many will be shocked to see it celebrated on such a large stage, considering the track hurled serious accusations at Drake, including him allegedly being a paedophile. The song’s content has led to Drake filing a lawsuit against Universal Music Group in which he alleges that the label defamed him by promoting the false allegations voiced on the song.

“At the end of the day, (there is) nothing more powerful than rap music. I don’t care what it is.”
Kendrick will likely perform the song at the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday, February 9, which is likely to stir up more controversy. After his historic night on Sunday, Kendrick now has 22 Grammy wins total. The only rap artists with more are Kanye West and Jay Z, with 24 each.
Beyoncé also won big with her album “Cowboy Carter,” which was inspired by the black cowboys of the American West. Despite all the success she has seen in he illustrious career, Sunday night marked the first time Beyoncé won Album of the Year. She also became the first black woman to win best country album.
“I just feel full and very, very honoured. It’s been many, many years.”
The third and last Grammy she took home was for Best Country Duo/Group Performance, which she won with “II Most Wanted,” which features Miley Cyrus. Even before the night began, Beyoncé was the most nominated and most awarded artist in the award show’s history. Now, she had added three more to bring her total to 35 wins, and has finally won that elusive Album of the Year award.
