During the interview, Colbert showcased the controversial Rolling Stone cover featuring the actress. Responding to criticism, Stewart said that there is a discrepancy in reactions between male-centric covers featuring similar imagery and the lack of backlash they receive.

She remarked on the irony of how overt acknowledgment of women’s bodies often provokes negative responses from “misogynistic people”.

Colbert agreed with the actress’s stance. He noted that he had seen more revealing covers on magazines the Rolling Stone and Sports Illustrated.

Stewart maintained that her cover “challenged” societal norms regarding women’s bodies. She argued that women are often expected to passively “receive desire” rather than actively participate in it.
