WEBDESK: The Netflix series depicting the 1989 murders, in which Lyle and Erik Menendez murdered their parents, has come under fire from the notorious killers themselves for lies.

Last week, the Netflix true crime drama “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Mendez Story” premiered worldwide. The series chronicles the events which occurred in 1989, leading to a trial that saw the Menendez brothers claim that they committed the murders of their parents in self-defence.

The two brothers claimed they had been the victim of sexual abuse from their father Jose beginning at the age of six.

Erik issued a statement while serving a life sentence in prison without parole, criticising show producer Ryan Murphy by stating he shaped “his horrible narrative through vile and appalling character portrayals of Lyle and of me.”

Viewers have been vocal about the series, critiquing the implication of an incestuous relationship between the brothers. Erik has expressed concerns about how the show can reinforce harmful narratives about male trauma and sexual abuse.

“I believed we had moved beyond the lies and ruinous character portrayals of Lyle,” wrote Erik. The show depicts Lyle in a more negative light compared to his brother, while family has described him differently.
