ISLAMABAD: Men’s skin is often overlooked.
While we’re used to seeing a plethora of 10-step skincare routines marketed to women, rarely do we discuss the same needs for men. Men’s skin needs attention too; in fact dermatologists recommend men get facials more often than women due to their thicker skin and texture.
Having a daily skin regimen is not only beneficial for skin health and appearance, but it can add a much-needed source of relaxation to your day. Three to Four basic steps is all you need.
CLEANSE
Basically, wash your face. Twice daily. Cleanser pulls away excess oil from the skin, washing away sweat, dirt, and any other build up.
While the cleanser you use can be catered to your skin type, which can be dry, oily, or combination skin, for most people a simple cleanser without complicated ingredients will do the job. CeraVe’s Hydrating Facial Cleanser suits all skin types.
EXFOLIATE
This is an optional step. However, it can be game-changing for men with specific skin concerns. Exfoliating weekly helps your skin cells turn over to reveal fresh skin.
There are two types of exfoliants: physical scrubs, and chemical acids. Scrubs can cause more damage because of their harsh nature, which is why dermatologists recommend sticking to chemical exfoliation.
If you have acne, use a Salycilic acid, if you have texture issues or dark spots, use lactic acid. The Ordinary has a range of these for you to explore.
MOISTURISE
Once you’ve cleansed (and exfoliated), it’s time to restore moisture into your skin. Moisturising prevents excess oil production and also forms a protective barrier on top of the skin’s surface. Over time it shields you from aging pollutants.
For skin that tends to be an oilier side, lightweight moisturisers like Cetaphil or CeraVe’s Moisturising Lotions will suit you. For typically drier skin, use the cream versions of those products.
SUN PROTECT
Finally, and most importantly, use sunscreen. Every morning. The sun’s harmful UV rays are the number one cause of skin damage, aging, and skin cancer. Look for any sunscreen labelled SPF 30+ and up to block the rays and slow down the process of wrinkle formation. Jenpharm’s sunscreens are affordable and effective. Neutrogena and La Roche-Posay also have extensive sunscreen lines to select from.
