Microsoft surprises gamers with launch of ‘Age of Empires IV’ on Xbox Consoles, Game Pass

Age of Empires IV

REDMOND: Microsoft surprised gamers as they launched highly-anticipated Age of Empires IV on Tuesday, making it available on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One consoles, as well as Xbox Game Pass.

The game’s introduction to Xbox consoles was initially announced last year with a commitment for a 2023 release. Moreover, enthusiasts of Xbox Cloud Gaming will also have the option to stream Age of Empires IV.

Age of Empires IV initially debuted on the PC platform in late 2021 and was eventually integrated into Microsoft’s PC Game Pass service. To make it work well on all consoles, Microsoft added a tutorial to help players get used to using the controller. The game, however, also works with both keyboards and mouse inputs.

Although real-time strategy (RTS) games may not seem feel like they fit well on consoles, Microsoft surprised everyone with the highly acclaimed Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition earlier this year. Verge reporter Ash Parrish praised the thoughtful design of the controller interface, which seamlessly bridged the gap between traditional mouse and keyboard play.

Age of Empires IV introduces a unique system for villagers, as it incorporates both predefined presets and customisable options. This innovative feature empowers players to effortlessly assign villagers to resource-gathering tasks through a single button press. That sounds exciting!

Meanwhile, acknowledging the importance of accessibility, Microsoft has integrated an array of options including adjustable difficulty levels, in-game narration, and a high contrast mode. For multiplayer enthusiasts, Age of Empires IV accommodates up to seven players in both player-vs-player (PvP) and player-vs-enemy (PvE) modes on Xbox Series X/S, or up to three friends on Xbox One.

Furthermore, in terms of technical specifications, the game aims for up to 4K resolution on Xbox Series X, 1080p on Xbox Series S, 1440p on Xbox One X, and 900p on Xbox One consoles. Both Xbox Series X and S versions boast support for up to 60 frames per second (fps), while the Xbox One version is fine-tuned for optimal performance at 30fps.
