The roses Theo and Ivy; and Emily in Paris

Emily in Paris

WEB DESK: If you’ve been craving a dose of Benedict Cumberbatch on the big screen, get ready for a treat on August 29. He’s teaming up with Olivia Colman in ‘The Roses’ – a fresh twist on the 1989 classic The War of the Roses.

The film tells the story of Theo and Ivy, a seemingly perfect couple whose picture-perfect life starts to crumble when Ivy’s career skyrockets while Theo faces a major setback: losing his job as an architect. The trailer teases, Ivy and Theo’s lives look flawless on the outside – successful careers, a loving marriage, happy kids. But as Ivy’s star rises, and Theo’s career takes a nosedive, tensions begin to simmer. Beneath the surface, a storm of fierce competition and simmering resentment is about to explode.

In the US, The Roses will arrive on August 29. However, if you’re overseas, in France and Italy especially, you might get an early peek on August 27. Argentina, Australia, and Brazil will follow with their releases on August 28. For Pakistan, no specific release date has been announced yet, but it will be no time before the Cumber-collective finds their favorite star on screens here too!

This film is a modern reimagining of the 1989 cult classic The War of the Roses, which itself was adapted from Warren Adler’s 1981 novel. The original film, directed by Danny DeVito, featured Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in the leading roles, with DeVito also providing a memorable supporting performance. For this new version, the director’s chair is filled by Jay Roach (known for Bombshell, Meet the Parents, and the Austin Powers films), and the screenplay is crafted by Tony McNamara, the Oscar-nominated writer behind Poor Things, The Favourite, and the TV series The Great.

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Theo, while Olivia Colman plays Ivy in this central, tumultuous marriage. Another notable entry is Andy Samberg – Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Jake Peralta. Expect standout performances from Samberg who is playing Barry, a friend who watches the couple’s decline firsthand, and Kate McKinnon as Amy, Theo’s confidant during his personal and professional downfall.

Rounding out the cast is Allison Janney, who takes on the role of Eleanor, Ivy’s divorce lawyer, navigating the increasingly bitter divorce proceedings. Other familiar faces include Belinda Bromilow, Sunita Mani, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, Hala Finley, and Akie Kotabe.

So, whether you’re a longtime fan of the original drama (or Cumberbatch!) or just in the mood for a darkly funny rollercoaster, The Roses will be the movie-night out plan for you.
