‘This is one for the fans’: Cillian Murphy on ‘Peaky Blinders’ film

LOS ANGELES: Oscar winner Cillian Murphy is returning to 1900s Birmingham for a new “Peaky Blinders” movie.

The Irish actor is reprising his role as Tommy Shelby for the feature film, which Netflix has greenlit.

The streaming giant announced the news on Tuesday (June 4), saying the movie would go into production later this year.

Steven Knight, who created the hit British post World War One drama about the Peaky Blinders crime gang, has written the script and will co-produce.

Tom Harper, who directed episodes in the BBC show’s first season in 2013, “returns to helm the film”, Netflix said in a statement, adding that further casting as well as the movie plot “remain tightly under wraps”.

“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,” Murphy said in the statement as well as on a post on X by Netflix.

“It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”

Murphy, who picked up his first Oscar earlier this year for his leading role in “Oppenheimer”, will also co-produce the movie, which Netflix said would be made in association with BBC Film.

Set in the British city of Birmingham, “Peaky Blinders” ran for six seasons from 2013 to 2022.
