SEOUL: A travel ban was put on Ramsey Khalid Ismael, better known by his online pseudonym Johnny Somali, on Tuesday after he was indicted by South Korean prosecutors for “causing a commotion”.

Somali was reported to the police on October 17 for causing a commotion at a convenience store. He allegedly confronted a convenience store worker, making sexist comments after he was told not to drink alcohol inside the store.

A Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office spokesperson stated that Ismael was “indicted on Monday without detention for creating a commotion at a convenient store in October.” The streamer and YouTuber has been hit with a travel ban and thus cannot leave South Korea. He is facing up to ten years in prison.

Before allegedly harassing the convenience store worker, Somali had been heavily criticised online for skiing a Korean wartime memorial statue honouring victims of wartime sexual slavery. Ismael later apologised stating “I want to apologise to Koreans. I didn’t understand the significance of the statue.”

WHO IS SOMALI?

Johnny Somali is an American live streamer who travels around the world conducting egregious stunts and making racist comments to locals. He has previously travelled to Japan, where he made comments about the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to locals. In another instance, he made comments about the Fukushima nuclear accident while trespassing in a hotel construction site in Osaka. Following these instances, Ismael was arrested and deported.

Somali has acknowledged his actions as being harmful and stated that he feels no remorse. “Why you being racist to other people in other countries? For money, for clout,” Somali explained, adding that “I’ve said it many times, I don’t give a fuck, I have no morals.”
