WEB DESL: The Walt Disney Company recently announced the revival of the famous 90s animated series, “X-Men: The Animated Series” under a new title “X-Men ’97”.
The sequel picks up directly from where the original series concluded.
Marvel Studios Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation Brad Winderbaum discussed how he was able to get the project approved from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. He also delved into details about his journey in securing the original theme song and cast. To his luck, both were readily available, with the original cast members eager to reprise their roles.

X-Men ’97 diverges from all recent reboots or remakes of existing intellectual properties (IP) as it continues the narrative of the original series. It explores the aftermath of X-Men founder Dr Charles Xavier’s death.
Beloved original characters Cyclops and Magneto also return. In the direct sequel, the two grapple with fulfilling Xavier’s dream of coexistence between the mutants and humans as his absence is acutely felt.
The decision to revive the series in 2024 was influenced by the success of Marvel’s animated series, “What If?”. There is a growing demand for animated content and Winderbaum seized the opportunity to reintroduce the X-Men to a new generation of viewers while also appealing to nostalgic fans from the 90s.

Unlike recent iterations of beloved classic cartoons, one of the distinguishing features of X-Men ’97 is its commitment to preserving the aesthetic and storytelling style of the original series. The animators collaborated closely with original series co-creator and director.
Despite advancements in animation technology, the team intentionally adhered to the of 90s cell animation.
“X-Men ’97” is slated to release 10 episodes, with new episodes debuting weekly on Disney+.
