WEB DESK: A recent study has raised alarms about the potential dangers of xylitol, a common ingredient in artificial sweeteners, suggesting it may significantly increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Published in the ‘European Heart Journal,’ the research indicates that individuals with high levels of xylitol in their blood are more likely to experience heart attacks, strokes, or other cardiovascular problems within a three-year period.
This conclusion is based on an extensive analysis involving over 3,000 participants from both the United States and Europe.
In the laboratory phase of the study, scientists observed that xylitol prompts platelets to clot more readily, which heightens the risk of blood clots.
These findings are particularly concerning given the widespread use of xylitol as a zero-calorie sweetener in various sugar-free products, including toffees, chewing gum, baked goods, and toothpaste.
The study’s revelations underscore the need for further research and caution among consumers, particularly those who regularly use products containing xylitol.
