Blast triggers release of toxic gas in Karachi factory, 20 affected

KARACHI: Following an explosion at a factory located in Karachi’s Fish Harbour, the release of toxic gas begun, affecting at least 20 individuals, who have been hospitalised.
According to rescue sources, 19 affected women, who were rendered unconscious by the toxic gas, have been transported to the Civil Hospital Karachi for treatment.
Sources revealed that the smell of ammonia gas has spread in the vicinity, affecting more people.
The sources said that several women who lost consciousness due to the gas exposure were rushed to the hospital for immediate medical treatment.
In response to the spread of ammonia gas odour in the area, emergency agencies were called to the scene.
According to police sources, the supervisors and engineers of the factory have been arrested on charges of negligence and recklessness.
Security In-charge of Fish Harbour, Naseer Boneri, told Geo News that the factory was involved in shrimp and fish processing.
The explosion of ammonia gas led to the diffusion of the unpleasant odour in the area. Around 60 women had arrived at the factory for work around 9am, he said.
Initially, it was reported that 11 women had lost consciousness due to the gas exposure and were taken to the Civil Hospital. The remaining women in the factory were reported to be safe.
Authorities were currently working to ensure the safety of the affected individuals and to mitigate the impact of the gas exposure.
Meanwhile, the incident prompted immediate action from the Sindh government, with Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah taking notice of the gas leak and calling for a comprehensive report from the commissioner and the minister of labour.
The chief minister emphasised the importance of taking all necessary measures to ensure the well-being of the workers and residents in the vicinity.
As of now, reports indicate that eleven women have been affected by the toxic gas emissions.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has directed the relevant authorities to prioritise the safety of the women and make every effort to save their lives.
Shah has issued instructions for a thorough inspection of the factory by the Sindh Food Department. He has also stressed the need for immediate action if any malfunctioning gas cylinders were found on the premises.
The Sindh chief minister urged the relevant authorities to swiftly address the situation and ensure the safe disposal of any defective gas cylinders found at the factory.
Sources said that authorities were working diligently to mitigate the effects of the gas leak and provide necessary medical care to the affected individuals.
