20 killed in Chilas bus accident

DIAMER: At least 20 people lost their lives while 22 sustained injuries after a passenger bus veered off a narrow mountain road and plummeted into a ravine early Friday morning.

The mishap took place at the Yashokhal area on the Karakoram Highway in Diamer district early Friday morning at around 5:30am, according to the police. 

The bus was on its way from Rawalpindi to Hunza.

GB Spokesperson Faizullah Faraq said the accident with bus registration number 8831 occurred due to overspeeding at Yashkul Das, 20 km away from Chilas City near the Gounar Farm on the Karakoram Highway.

After the accident was reported, rescue teams were dispatched towards the site. The injured people and the bodies have been shifted to a hospital in Chilas.  

According to Director Health Service Shakeel Ahmed some of the injured are in serious condition and there is fear that the death toll could rise.

Director of the health department said that three women were among those who were dead. 

Gilgit Baltistan Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan expressed his condolences over the incident, directing the administration and rescuers to provide immediate medical aid to the injured.

GB government’s spokesperson said that emergency have been imposed in Chilas hospital.
