Residents seek official notification for December 27 holiday

KARACHI: As the clock ticks closer to December 27, residents of Sindh, particularly Karachi, are eagerly awaiting confirmation on whether this year will mark a public holiday in remembrance of the death anniversary of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto.

As of the morning of Tuesday, December 26, the Sindh government has yet to issue an official notification regarding the status of a public holiday tomorrow on December 27, 2023, leaving the populace in anticipation.

The decision, once announced, will determine whether offices and markets will be closed tomorrow or if business will continue as usual.

The collective anticipation among the public is palpable as they await the official pronouncement from the Sindh government, which is expected to clarify the definitive status of the expected public holiday. However, as of now, there is no indication of the government’s decision.

In the absence of an official holiday notification, offices and markets in Sindh will continue with their regular operations on Wednesday, December 27 (tomorrow).

It is pertinent to mention that in the previous year, 2022, the Sindh government declared a public holiday “on the occasion of the shahadat of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.”

This holiday applied to all offices, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils under the administrative control of the Government of Sindh, excluding essential services and those engaged in COVID-19 emergency and flood relief duties.
