5.1 earthquake rocks Islamabad, Rawalpindi


A magnitude 5.3 earthquake occurred approximately 56 kilometres north-earth of Barkhan, Balochistan, the USGS reported early on Sunday.

ISLAMABAD: A 5.1 magnitude earthquake rocked the twins cities of Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Northern Pakistan including Balakot, early on Sunday.

The earthquake struck the capital around 12:10 am on Sunday.

Earthquake on Richter scale

Earthquake intensity recorded at 5.1 on the Richter scale. The epicentre of the earthquake was 15 kilometres south-east of Rawat.

The affected countries include India and Pakistan.

Earthquake felt in Northern Pakistan

Residents reported strong earthquake tremors in Balakot, Swabi, Shangla and surrounding areas. Similarly, tremors were also felt in Chakwal, Sarai Alamgir, and Fateh Jang.

A resident in Gujar Khan reported feeling the “earthquake near me”, with the entire family running outside.

Similarly, Haripur and surrounding areas were also shaken.

Casualties

No casualties were reported so far.

This is the second day of earthquake striking northern Pakistan. Yesterday, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake jolted Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and even Peshawar.

The earthquake’s epicenter was Farkhar, Afghanistan. It struck around 2:06 am, with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reporting the quake’s depth at around 122 kilometres.
