54 Afghan prisoners released from Pakistani prisons

ISLAMABAD/KABUL: The Afghan Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan recently announced that 54 Afghan prisoners were released from Karachi prisons and returned to their country, Khaama Press reported on Thursday.

Abdul Jabbar Takharai, the Afghan Consul in Karachi, Pakistan, stated that 54 prisoners were released from Pakistani prisons as of Wednesday, April 4th.

Takharai added that the newly released prisoners were freed from Sindh province prisons of Pakistan, including 11 children among them.

The Afghan Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan, has stated that approximately 50 individuals are still detained in Pakistani prisons, and efforts are underway to secure their release.

This comes as previously 4,111 Afghan citizens, including women and children, were freed and returned to their country as a result of the efforts of this consulate.

Furthermore, Afghan citizens in Pakistan have been detained and subsequently deported by Pakistani police for various reasons.

Pakistani authorities have repeatedly emphasised that the main reason for detaining Afghan migrants in Pakistan is the lack of legal documentation for residency.

This comes amid a dire humanitarian crisis in the country and most of the returnees face challenges including a lack of foodstuffs, shelters, clear water and job opportunities.
