70 year old man arrested for marrying a 13 year old girl in Swat

SWAT: A 70-year-old man , who married a 13-year-old girl in Swat without the girl’s knowledge has been arrested on Monday.

The marriage took place in the Nagoha area of Barikot in Swat on Sunday. The girl was not present in the ceremony.

The girl, who is in the sixth grade, said that she was at school when she found out that she had been married.

According to sources, the man has eight children and grandchildren. He reportedly paid the girl’s parents Rs1 million.

The marriage registrar had issued a marriage certificate signed by witnesses.

Getting the information, the police swung into action and took the groom and father of the minor girl into custody.

The nikahkhuwan and the witnesses of the marriage were also taken into custody. Meanwhile, the minor girl was sent to the hospital for her medical.

Under Pakistan’s current law, the outdated Marriage Restraint Act of 1929, sets the minimum age for marriage at 16 for girls and 18 for boys.
