ISLAMABAD: The turmoil in Afghanistan following the American military withdrawal has led to an alarming surge in terrorism incidents in Pakistan, which is testing the historic ties between the two nations and challenging Pakistan’s security and stability.
Hopes for peace in the region following the establishment of the interim government in Afghanistan have been dashed, said Caretaker Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar while addressing a press conference in Islamabad on Wednesday.
“For four decades, Pakistan has shown unwavering support and brotherhood towards Afghanistan,” he said, adding that the relations between the two nations are deeply rooted in history, culture, and shared values.” However, recent developments have strained these long-standing ties.

The Caretaker PM emphasised the close relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan and the assistance Pakistan has provided during times of crisis in Afghanistan. He noted that any calamity in Afghanistan had been met with full assistance from Pakistan.
However, in the past two years, there has been a significant increase in terrorist activities in Pakistan, originating from Afghan soil. “It appears that terrorists are using Afghanistan as a base to launch attacks against Pakistan, which is causing serious security concerns,” he added.
In a statement condemning the situation, Anwar Haq Kakar expressed his disappointment with threatening statements made by Afghan leaders. He stressed that Afghanistan must make a choice between the Tehreek-e-Taliban and Pakistan. The Caretaker Prime Minister called on the Afghan Interim Government to hand over individuals involved in terrorism to Pakistan.
He also discussed the close connection between benami (anonymous) properties and terrorist activities in Pakistan. He urged the Afghan interim government to take action against terrorists operating from their territory.
The caretaker PM said that Pakistan would continue the Afghan transit to facilitate the convenience of Afghan citizens, despite the growing security challenges.
He also mentioned that Pakistan is in contact with the United States regarding the ongoing situation. He underscored that Pakistan’s decisions were made within limited resources and in the country’s best interest.
Expressing deep concern for the ongoing conflict in Palestine, Anwar Haq Kakar stated that such a crime has not been committed even in centuries. He further announced that he would demand a ceasefire in Gaza during an upcoming meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
