Punjab govt plans to establish Allama Iqbal Museum near Badshahi Masjid

LAHORE: In a significant development, the Punjab government, under the leadership of Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, has announced plans to establish a dedicated museum near Mazar-e-Iqbal, situated adjacent to the historic Badshahi Masjid in Lahore.

The initiative aims to showcase and preserve the belongings of the renowned poet of the East, Allama Muhammad Iqbal.

The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Saturday.

The primary objective of this museum is to enhance the understanding and appreciation of Allama Iqbal’s legacy.

Every item associated with the poet will be meticulously displayed within the museum premises, creating a comprehensive and immersive experience for visitors.

Expressing his views on this pivotal occasion, Caretaker CM Naqvi emphasised that the establishment of this museum would be an unforeseen blessing for those with a keen interest in Iqbal’s profound knowledge.

He issued directives to adorn the Mazar-i-Iqbal with the finest tiles and to use top-tier materials such as high-quality red sandstone and super white marble for the mausoleum.

The meeting also outlined plans for the restoration of rooms within the Badshahi Masjid to their original, pristine condition.

Senior Member of the Board of Revenue, Nabil Javed, provided insights into the museum’s enhancements and the development around Mazar-i-Iqbal.

He disclosed that a dedicated bookshop, located on the right side of Allama Iqbal’s Mazar, would offer a comprehensive collection of Allama Iqbal’s literary works.

Additionally, souvenir and craft shops are slated to be established within the museum premises.

Further details presented during the meeting highlighted the meticulous care that would be taken for the preservation of Allama Iqbal’s shrine.

The inner marble will undergo a thorough wash and polish, and the roof will be specially waterproofed to ensure long-term conservation.

Practical considerations such as relocating the canteen and shoe rack to more suitable locations were also addressed.

The meeting witnessed the participation of key officials, including Nayar Ali Dada, Muneeb Iqbal, Iqbal Salahuddin, Senior Member Board of Revenue, DG Walled City Authority, Secretary Auqaf, Head of Iqbal Academy, and other distinguished individuals.

This ambitious project reflects the government’s commitment to honouring the rich cultural and intellectual heritage of Allama Muhammad Iqbal.
